On Monday, 2 August 2027, the path of a total solar eclipse will cross Egypt. Luxor is one of the most practical places in the world to observe the event: it lies inside the path of totality, offers approximately 6 minutes 22 seconds of totality, and has the hotels, airport connections, Nile cruise operations and local tourism services needed for a multi-day trip.

This guide explains the verified Luxor timings, which Egyptian cities see totality, the difference between cruise-deck and land viewing, eye safety, August heat planning, accommodation and transport. It also links to the detailed Pure Nile Tours planning guides created for travellers comparing locations and trip formats.

Planning an organised Egypt eclipse trip?

The 8-day Solar Eclipse Egypt Tour combines Cairo, an Aswan-to-Luxor Nile cruise and organised viewing from the sundeck of a 5-star cruise ship moored in Luxor. Eclipse safety glasses, domestic flights, guiding and the main sightseeing programme are included according to the selected package.

What Makes the 2 August 2027 Eclipse Important?

A total solar eclipse occurs when the Moon completely covers the Sun’s bright face for observers inside a narrow path across Earth. During totality, the solar corona becomes visible, the sky darkens rapidly and the environment changes within seconds. Outside that narrow path, observers see only a partial eclipse, even when almost all of the Sun appears covered.

The 2027 eclipse belongs to Solar Saros 136. The National Solar Observatory describes it as the second-longest total solar eclipse of the 21st century, with maximum duration near Luxor of about 6 minutes 22 seconds. The global maximum is slightly longer at a point southeast of Luxor, but Luxor combines near-maximum duration with established tourism infrastructure.

The distinction between totality and a deep partial eclipse is essential. In Aswan, the local eclipse magnitude is approximately 0.996, but the bright photosphere is not completely covered. Aswan therefore does not show the full totality sequence, and approved eye protection remains necessary throughout the event there. Hurghada is also outside totality. Marsa Alam and some parts of the southern Red Sea coast are inside the path, but the exact property or viewing-site coordinates must be checked.

Where Can You See Totality in Egypt?

Luxor: The Strongest All-Round Base

Luxor receives approximately 6 minutes 22 seconds of totality. It also provides the operational advantages most eclipse travellers need: an airport, a large range of hotels, Nile cruise moorings, licensed guides, tourism vehicles, hospitals and established routes on both banks of the Nile.

The city’s two sides offer different logistics. The East Bank has the greatest concentration of hotels, cruise moorings and city services. The West Bank can provide more open rural and desert-edge landscapes, but facilities and access depend on the exact site. The detailed guide Luxor East Bank vs West Bank for Eclipse Viewing compares access, sightlines, photography and crowd management.

Aswan: Excellent for the Itinerary, Not for Totality

Aswan is a major Nile destination and a logical starting point for a northbound cruise, but the city itself sees a partial eclipse. Timeanddate lists maximum eclipse in Aswan at approximately 13:08 with a magnitude of 0.996. That is a very deep partial eclipse, but it is not totality.

An Aswan-to-Luxor cruise can still be an effective eclipse itinerary when it reaches Luxor before 2 August. Read Luxor vs Aswan for the 2027 Solar Eclipse for the astronomical and travel differences.

Hurghada: Partial Eclipse and a Post-Eclipse Red Sea Stay

Hurghada sees a partial eclipse with maximum magnitude around 0.980. Travellers staying there on 2 August will not experience totality. A practical Luxor–Hurghada itinerary observes totality in Luxor first, then transfers to the Red Sea for a resort stay.

The 7-day Cairo, Luxor and Hurghada Eclipse Tour follows this structure. For a detailed comparison, see Luxor vs the Red Sea for the 2027 Solar Eclipse.

Marsa Alam and the Southern Red Sea

Marsa Alam lies inside the path of totality and is calculated to receive about 5 minutes 30 seconds at the city coordinates. However, “Marsa Alam” is used broadly in hotel marketing. Resorts carrying the destination name can be many kilometres apart, and duration changes with latitude and longitude. Obtain the exact viewing-site coordinates before assuming that a property lies inside totality.

Cairo: Partial Eclipse Only

Cairo is outside the totality path. It works well as the international arrival point and for visiting the Pyramids, Sphinx and Grand Egyptian Museum before or after the eclipse. Travellers whose priority is totality should reach Luxor, Marsa Alam or another verified location inside the path before eclipse day.

Do Not Assume Karnak or Another Monument Is a Confirmed Viewing Site

Karnak Temple, the Valley of the Kings and other archaeological sites are protected places with capacity, security, conservation and photography rules. Their open spaces may appear suitable, but public access for a major astronomical event cannot be assumed.

Until written approval and the final operating plan are available, use wording such as:

  • designated eclipse viewing site in Luxor;
  • planned viewing area subject to final approval;
  • organised cruise-deck viewing while moored in Luxor.

The current Pure Nile Tours 8-day programme specifies viewing from the open sundeck of a 5-star Nile cruise ship moored in Luxor. The 7-day Luxor and Hurghada programme specifies a designated viewing site in Luxor. These two products should not be described as though both guarantee access inside Karnak Temple.

Nile Cruise Deck or Land Viewing?

Both formats can work. The correct choice depends on the actual site, group size and operational plan.

Factor Nile cruise sundeck Land viewing site
Transport Can minimise eclipse-morning transfers for guests already aboard Requires timed road movement and parking
Facilities Usually provides toilets, water, food service and air-conditioned interiors Facilities must be built, hired or confirmed nearby
Camera stability Can be affected by vibration, wind, wake and passenger movement Firm ground is normally better for long lenses and heavy tripods
Capacity Limited by the genuinely usable open-deck area Potentially larger, but attendance still needs a fixed limit
Accessibility Depends on stairs, lifts and deck layout Depends on surface, walking distance and vehicle access
Backup plan Needs an alternative berth or land option Needs a second approved site or hotel/cruise fallback

Prepare for Eclipse Day

Luxor Eclipse Timeline on 2 August 2027

The verified local circumstances for Luxor are:

  • 11:40: partial eclipse begins;
  • around 13:02: totality begins, depending on exact coordinates;
  • 13:05: maximum eclipse;
  • around 13:08: totality ends;
  • 14:26: partial eclipse ends.

The complete event lasts approximately 2 hours 46 minutes, while totality lasts about 6 minutes 22 seconds. Final second-by-second contact times should be generated for the confirmed viewing site, not copied from a city-centre estimate.

A Practical Viewing-Day Schedule

  • Before 10:30: eat, hydrate, charge equipment and attend the safety briefing indoors.
  • 10:30–11:30: reach the confirmed site, test glasses and filters, and arrange seating and tripod positions.
  • 11:40 onward: observe the partial phase only through approved solar viewers or correctly filtered optics.
  • Before totality: confirm the exact contact alert and review when filters may be removed.
  • During totality: direct naked-eye viewing is safe only while the Sun’s bright face is completely covered.
  • At the end of totality: replace viewers and equipment filters immediately when direct sunlight begins to reappear.
  • Afterward: move vulnerable guests to shade or air-conditioning before beginning sightseeing or transfers.

Eclipse Eye Safety

Ordinary sunglasses are not safe for looking directly at the Sun. During every partial phase, use solar viewers that conform to the ISO 12312-2 requirements and come from a trustworthy supplier. Inspect each viewer before use and discard it if it is scratched, torn or damaged.

Cameras, binoculars and telescopes require a securely mounted solar filter over the front of the optics. Wearing eclipse glasses while looking through unfiltered optical equipment is dangerous because the concentrated sunlight can damage the filter and the eye.

Inside the path of totality, approved viewers can be removed only when the Sun’s bright surface is fully covered. They must be replaced as soon as the bright photosphere begins to return. In Aswan, Hurghada and Cairo, where the eclipse remains partial, viewers stay on throughout the entire event.

Use the American Astronomical Society eye-safety guidance and NASA eclipse safety guidance for the final pre-trip briefing.

Luxor August Heat: Build Safety into the Schedule

The eclipse occurs near midday in early August, when Luxor is normally extremely hot. Historical averages are useful for planning, but they are not a forecast for 2 August 2027. A final weather and heat-health check is needed shortly before the event.

A properly managed site should provide:

  • a shaded waiting area large enough for the group;
  • continuous access to drinking water;
  • seating for older travellers and anyone with limited stamina;
  • nearby toilets;
  • air-conditioned recovery space or vehicles;
  • trained first-aid support and a clear emergency route;
  • short, controlled movement between shade and the open viewing zone.

Travellers with chronic medical conditions or medication affected by heat should obtain individual advice before travel. See the detailed Luxor August heat-safety guide and the eclipse packing list.

How Early Should You Arrive in Luxor?

Do not design an itinerary that reaches Luxor on eclipse morning. A safer plan is to enter the totality area by 1 August at the latest, with more time for photographers, group organisers and travellers arriving on separate international tickets.

The main reasons are:

  • airline or cruise delays;
  • road congestion and security controls;
  • last-minute mooring changes;
  • the need to inspect the viewing site;
  • equipment setup and safety briefings;
  • high accommodation demand.

The 8-day Pure Nile Tours programme begins in Cairo, flies to Aswan and sails north to Luxor before the eclipse. This uses Aswan as the cruise starting point without incorrectly treating Aswan as a totality city.

Accommodation and Booking Questions

Demand for Luxor hotels, cruise cabins, domestic flights and suitable vehicles is expected to be much higher than during a normal August week. However, do not publish unsupported claims that a particular hotel is sold out or charging a specific eclipse premium unless the rate and date have been checked directly.

Before paying, request written confirmation of:

  • the hotel and room category;
  • the named cruise or acceptable substitution policy;
  • the planned eclipse-viewing format;
  • whether the ship is expected to be moored;
  • group size and usable viewing capacity;
  • eclipse-glasses provision;
  • tripod policy;
  • shade, water, toilets and accessibility;
  • the backup viewing plan;
  • cancellation and force-majeure terms.
